11. Everyone bails...

Backstory

It was a very strange year in Japan. I made a lot of plans with friends hoping to see them and hang out, but many of my plans got cancelled. By the time I got to Tokyo at the end of my trip all of my Tokyo friends had cancelled their plans with me, so I decided to back track to the Kansai region and meet up with other friends instead.

After all, I had much more fun in Kansai and Tokyo trains are way too overcrowded for my own enjoyment.

After making plans over the phone with a friend and taking the train all the way back to Osaka to meet her, my friend cancelled on me again and ghosted me, which is exactly what she did to me in the previous year.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned this year is that I can’t trust anything anybody tells me, especially if it’s making plans with someone in Japan — always expect the worst! Not only do they have a culture of not saying, “no” in Japan, they also apparently have a culture of saying “yes” and cancelling on you at the last minute or disappearing altogether. Also — if they sound excited, they are definitely lying to you.

I lost a lot of good friends this year, but if they were actually Good friends, maybe I wouldn’t have lost them.
